Per-Anders Benthin
CEO of the TRANSWAGGON Group

«In the European rail freight transport sector, it is somewhat unusual for a family-oriented business founded 60 years ago to still exist on the market. More than that, though: the TRANSWAGGON Group has maintained its independence, grown continually and constantly expanded its Europe-wide success. That we have managed to do so over six decades is no coincidence. I believe it is the consequence of a whole array of characteristics – our customer focus, our expertise, our flexibility, our willingness to innovate, our reliability, our flat hierarchies, our long-term approach and our commitment to a sustainable future. I am convinced that the DNA that has always characterised our company is the foundation of our success.

TRANSWAGGON is unique among the major wagon keepers in European rail freight transport. We have always been family-oriented and are still managed by a representative of the owner family. We still consider relationships between businesses to be first and foremost relationships between people. That is why TRANSWAGGON does not have just employees: we have colleagues who work together, who belong to the TRANSWAGGON family for almost all their working life – and of that I am proud. That we also see our customers as partners is not mere lip service – it is our deepest conviction. And that is why we think it is always important to listen attentively. We want to approach the individual challenges facing our customers with an open mind so that we always arrive at the best solution. Professionally, with dedication and in a spirit of partnership.

TRANSWAGGON GmbH, Hamburg, Germany

„I joined TRANSWAGGON in 1993 as a salesperson through a former sister company of Railship. Railship was not a family business, but culturally and with regard to the Hanseatic mentality, the companies were very similar. The Hanseatic concept of "merchant’s honour“ may be a somewhat antiquated idea, but it is still deeply rooted in the forwarding and logistics industry today – as a synonym for the fact that promises are made and kept based on a handshake. We are trying to keep this idea alive in today’s business world, even if much of it has become more anonymous due to tender management in sale and purchase models.

After my time as a salesperson at TRANSWAGGON, in 2007 I had the opportunity to take over sales responsibilities in the Hamburg office. In 2016, I succeeded our Managing Director Peter Studer, who I might call my mentor. All these years have been shaped by many cycles of change, which will certainly continue to be true in the future. As a group, we have always approached these changes with agility and flexibility. Luckily, TRANSWAGGON is anything but a tanker. When it comes to decisions, we’re a speedboat. Our flat hierarchies and direct communication between the offices allow us to react very quickly to market developments and customer requirements. We can quickly implement new use and business cases, not only in Germany, but throughout Europe.

It is also very important to us to maintain strategic partnerships with our customers, freight forwarding partners and rail service providers. In many cases, these partnerships have lasted for decades. Guiding principles such as „ Nothing is more permanent than change“ and „You always meet twice in life“ may sound outdated to members of Gen Z – for us, they remain important even after 60 years of TRANSWAGGON.“

„I am still relatively new in my role as Managing Director of TRANSWAGGON AB, the Swedish branch of the TRANSWAGGON Group. But I have already experienced a third of the company’s history: 20 years. My journey began in 2005 with a temporary position at the Dispatch & Planning department. At the time, I had no specific plans to stay with the company for long. On the one hand because of the short-term nature of the position, and on the other hand because I actually wanted to pursue a career in accounting and economics. Fortunately, it didn’t come to that. Instead, I got a permanent job at TRANSWAGGON and moved into sales shortly thereafter. In 2012, I became Head of Sales in Helsingborg, and in 2022, I took the next step to become Managing Director.

Looking back, I think there are several reasons why I deviated from my original plan and stayed with TRANSWAGGON for such a long time. Firstly, TRANSWAGGON still has the atmosphere of a small family business. Colleagues feel like friends or even like an extended family – and besides me, many others also consider the company to be their ”second family”. In addition, the variety of daily challenges and tasks, which means that no two days are the same, makes the company and the work interesting. What I also very much appreciate: at TRANSWAGGON, our aim is to build long-term partnerships and collaborations with customers and suppliers.

A personal highlight in my 20 years at TRANSWAGGON was the development of a very special logistical wagon system for a customer in Sweden. We have been continuously developing this system for over 20 years and adapting it to new market situations in close cooperation with the customer. I even have the feeling that this system embodies the essence of what TRANSWAGGON stands for: flexibility, partnership and trust.”

„Although my tenure with the company is relatively young – I joined just 15 months ago – I felt welcome in the TRANSWAGGON family from the very beginning. I am very grateful to be part of this remarkable organisation. The onboarding period flew by, filled with the excitement and challenges of operating in an extremely volatile market. The company’s unwavering commitment to repositioning itself and strengthening its market presence – including through a hub-and-spoke system – has been extremely motivating for me from the outset. I now have the privilege of experiencing and contributing to this development first hand.

My relationship with TRANSWAGGON goes back to 2006, when I first came to Italy as a key account manager for general cargo transports on behalf of Europe’s largest railway company. From the very beginning, I was deeply impressed by the way the TWA team in Milan, and not least Dr Andreas Nolte, always went out of their way to tailor solutions for their clients – always considering them as long-term partners and not just as a quick profit opportunity. In my opinion, this dedication to customer satisfaction and partnership is what has always set TWA apart in the industry.

What distinguishes TRANSWAGGON from other players in the railway business is its exceptional professionalism and profound commitment to quality. The company’s standards are second to none, and its reputation for excellence is well-deserved. These qualities have always impressed me and reinforced my decision to join TWA myself in October 2023. I am particularly proud of the fact that as of June 2025 I am the first woman in the company’s history to hold the position of managing director of a national branch. This is a milestone for me personally and also for TRANSWAGGON – further proof of the progressive and inclusive corporate culture.

I am honoured to be part of continuing TRANSWAGGON’s success story in the years to come. I am particularly looking forward to contributing to the development of our hub-and-spoke system across Europe. This will enable us to offer our current and future customers – including those without a direct rail connection – an environmentally friendly rail solution from door to door, while also optimising our fleet. In the near future, this project and the strengthening of TWA’s position as an important provider in the finished vehicle logistics sector will surely keep me busy and inspired.”

Dr. Andreas Nolte

Former Managing Director
TRANSWAGGON S.p.A., Milan, Italy

„In June 2025, I handed over my position as Managing Director of the Italian TRANSWAGGON subsidiary, which I have held since 1992, to my very experienced deputy, Magdalena Grząka. However, I will remain closely involved with TRANSWAGGON as a consultant. TRANSWAGGON has always preserved its character as a family business – with all the benefits this has for employees and customers alike. We at TRANSWAGGON are there for each other and for our customers thanks to our short decision paths, great flexibility and innovative solutions.

My time at TRANSWAGGON is also something of a family story. My father moved from Deutsche Bundesbahn to TRANSWAGGON in 1968, and I was already working regularly in the company while studying for my law degree. Udo-Wolfgang Benthin, the founder of the company, then took me on as a manager. TRANSWAGGON was my first and so far only employer – my second family, as it were. As Managing Director in Italy since the mid-1990s, I have been able to help develop our products and services. One such example was a multi-client train between Lucca and Chiasso that we configured entirely ourselves. Our ‘Lucca-Express’ still serves this route several times a week in both directions, including today. Even then, TRANSWAGGON was moving from simply leasing wagons to becoming a logistics company, progressing towards the hub-and-spoke models and door-to-door concepts of today.

Perhaps one of the particular highlights from the recent past was when we were able to facilitate a major Italian car haulage firm’s switch to sustainable rail transport – previously they had almost only ever gone by road. This automotive logistics provider has permanently leased several hundred wagons on a long-term contract. Another 100 completely new flat wagons will be utilised for this customer from 2026. Finding the optimal solution in close partnership with our customers – that’s what TRANSWAGGON has always been about.”

TRANSWAGGON is defined by a unique combination of expertise, innovative spirit and customer orientation. Employees bring with them not only extensive knowledge of the market but also a remarkable ability to respond to the individual needs of their partners. In addition, the company is always ready to break new ground and actively promote rail freight transport.

I would particularly like to highlight the many projects in which we have developed innovative solutions together to overcome the challenges of rail freight transport. It’s the many small successes that make this collaboration so special. The respectful and friendly interaction that we’ve developed over the years is an indispensable part of our partnership for me.“

"We have already carried out several projects with TRANSWAGGON – always with success. There are numerous positive qualities that we have come to appreciate about TRANSWAGGON, from the company’s reliability, professionalism and seriousness to our consistently pleasant collaboration. In October 2024, for example, we transported 30 field material handling machines with 30 fire-fighting water pump trailers to Ukraine. This load was transported to the Ukrainian border by rail on 15 rented TWA 800 wagons. These heavily lowered flat wagon units are particularly suitable for transporting large vehicles and machinery. TRANSWAGGON reserved the wagons for us in advance."

What’s more, you always feel like you are on an equal footing with them, and the collaboration takes place in a professional yet collegial environment. TRANSWAGGON brings in-depth knowledge of freight wagon construction and management and offers solutions that are precisely tailored to the requirements of modern rail freight transport. With this ability to develop individual solutions and respond flexibly to specific needs, TRANSWAGGON also sets standards in customer service. I particularly remember how together we were able to convince a major customer, who had no prior interest in rail transport, to embrace it as a viable option. TRANSWAGGON’s focus on sustainability also plays a major role here: they are consistently committed to sustainable transport solutions and environmental responsibility, and make an important contribution to climate-friendly logistics."

“It’s fair to say that not only have we been loyal to TRANSWAGGON for a long time, but TRANSWAGGON has also been loyal to us. We’ve been using TWA’s wagons for our paper shipments for a long time now, and we have worked with the same contact people for many years. Even though it was sometimes very difficult, TWA always helped us get wagons into our plant for loading. Throughout this time we have also profited from modernisation, such as the advanced Habbiins 17 with reinforced floors. We’ve even worked together to achieve improvements to wagons. One such example is the rubber lips on the sliding walls of the wagons, which are able to stop snow getting inside when it is snowing heavily. We came up with the idea, and TRANSWAGGON implemented it. Another particular success was when we collaborated with TRANSWAGGON and the railway undertakings to convert our block train to a train with TWA wagons only. We are still using it like this today. We’re also working together on new strategies. TWA helps us with all the issues we have in relation to traffic, technology, etc. It’s a partnership. And it’s the many little things that make our collaboration with TRANSWAGGON something special.”

What we also appreciate is that TWA involves us in the various issues at an early stage, especially when they concern workshops.

„TWA has been our partner since we founded IBS in 2007 – and we’ve grown with them by our side. This has not changed to this day. As always, TWA continues to support us in our projects and with the challenges we face today. I have always found TRANSWAGGON to be a highly trustworthy business partner in this market. Congratulations on 60 years of TWA!“

"There are three things that I particularly value about TRANSWAGGON: integrity, openness and reliability. TRANSWAGGON keeps its word. Our contractual discussions are also straightforward and clear. We work together in a spirit of great openness and honesty. It’s also great to be able to work with the same people over a long period of time. It means that we’re able to quickly find good, clear solutions that are sustainable and reliable. One of the highlights of our collaboration is that we have now been working together for many years for a major international customer in the sliding wall wagon sector."

"For more than 20 years, TRANSWAGGON has been a reliable, dependable partner and an integral part of our logistics chain. During this time, we have been particularly impressed by the close personal support we’ve always received as an equal partner. TRANSWAGGON understands our needs and challenges and always presents us custom solutions instead of template-based offers. Especially in today’s world, in which flexibility and fast reactions are required, we truly appreciate TRANSWAGGON’s innovative willingness to act. Whether technical changes, fluctuations in transport requirements or unforeseen events, TWA always finds a way to support us and keep our supply chains running. We would particularly like to highlight the absolute reliability that distinguishes TRANSWAGGON. Commitments can be relied on, deadlines are met and the quality of the wagons is always impeccable. This trust is the basis for our long and successful partnership. We warmly congratulate TWA on its 60th anniversary and look forward to many more years of successful collaboration."

"We have been working with TRANSWAGGON for many years. What I value most about working with them is our relationship and the trust. Because TWA knows our issues and problems well, we can work on our points with people who are familiar with the technology. They are also specialists in the type of wagons we need to use. What we also appreciate is that TWA involves us in the various issues at an early stage, especially when they concern workshops. Compared to other wagon lessor companies, TRANSWAGGON is a manageable organisation. And what is typical of TWA is its proximity to the customer. Thus, over the years, a genuine relationship of trust has developed with our contact person Stéphanie Bukala."

”I have known TRANSWAGGON since my commercial apprenticeship at Osthannoversche Eisenbahnen AG (OHE) in 1979. For me, it has always been a company that communicates clearly and directly: everything is straightforward and there’s not a lot of back and forth. Working together with our colleagues at TRANSWAGGON in Hamburg to coordinate positioning, dispatch of empty wagons and issuing consignment notes was already a pleasure back then on the customer side at OHE. My contacts at TRANSWAGGON were always experts with plenty of detailed knowledge of the situation. Thanks to the flexible use of wagons, they made it possible to get goods onto the railways easily and straightforwardly, in the service of the common cause.

Since 2016, I have been part of TRANSWAGGON myself and have been able to see the company from the inside. I now know that friendly and expert colleagues aren’t only to be found in Hamburg – it's the same in the other offices as well. The atmosphere is characterised by togetherness – not only during work but also in breaks and afterwards, from table football to barbecues. One of the great strengths of TRANSWAGGON is the short decision paths. I find it very positive that the management is always open to our ideas and suggestions, placed from myself or my colleagues. And even if there are occasional issues here and there, these things happen, even in the best families. It doesn’t change my assessment that TRANSWAGGON is an excellent TEAM. In other words: Together Everybody Achieves More.”

“My story at TRANSWAGGON began long before I officially joined the company in 2011. I grew up with a father who also had a career at TRANSWAGGON and went through his own journey within the company, starting in the dispatch & planning department, and then in sales. When he ended his career after 35 years, he was Managing Director in Helsingborg. When I started at TRANSWAGGON in 2011, I began in a temporary position in the technical department, but I ended up spending 11 years in the technical field. And now, after 14 years, I have taken another step in my career and represent the People & Culture department at our Helsingborg office.

My father's and my stories are not isolated cases. On the contrary, many of us have built long careers at TRANSWAGGON. I believe that TRANSWAGGON's long-term commitment and family-oriented approach are our greatest strengths and make us unique in our industry. Thanks to our shared experience and teamwork, we are experts in our field and provide high-quality services to our customers and suppliers. As an employee and as a representative of People & Culture, I particularly appreciate this stable and supportive working environment. It makes TRANSWAGGON a trustworthy employer with a long-term perspective that truly cares about each individual in the company. We all always strive to give our best, whether as employees or as employers.

In my opinion, for a company to survive for 60 years, it needs special qualities. It must be flexible and trustworthy, have the ability to build strong relationships and be willing to evolve. These are all qualities that I hope will carry us further into the future.”

In all this time – from my early days as a trainee in the sales department, when I could barely manage three words of German, to today – I have been lucky enough to work for a company that cultivates strong family values. Of course, as a family, we all go through things, but we always try to overcome challenges and do better. We are lucky to work in a sector with a positive environmental balance – and in a group that is committed to just that. Another aspect is also essential for me: diversity. „What characterises the atmosphere at TRANSWAGGON from an employee’s point of view is the relaxed yet respectful way we interact with each other. Not only are we all on first-name terms, we also frequently meet outside of work – often at after-work parties, or for paintball, breakfast together, or summer and Christmas parties. Flexible working hours and work-from-home options are also par for the course at TRANSWAGGON.

TRANSWAGGON does a lot for its staff when it comes to individual professional development as well, from internal and external specialist training to English classes. There is also a lot of support for young employees just starting their careers. This ranges from opportunities for student workers to combined vocational and academic training. I think this has to do with the fact that TRANSWAGGON is always interested in the individual. That means providing opportunities for growth and personal development as well as the health and wellbeing of employees. And if things ever get too stressful, you have ready access to the niko.health portal at all times. What makes working at TRANSWAGGON special is the collaborative, almost family-like corporate culture – friendly and respectful.“

“As long as I can remember, TRANSWAGGON has been a natural part of my life. In 1989, when I was eight years old, my mother started working at TRANSWAGGON in Helsingborg. Over time, she held various positions in dispatch & planning, sales, HR and IT. After an impressive 33 years at TWA, she retired in 2022. My own journey with TRANSWAGGON began in 2000 with a summer job at the reception desk. I also worked as a receptionist at TWA from 2002 to 2004, as a parental leave replacement. After other career steps, including in the transport and trucking industry, I was pleased to have the opportunity to reapply to TRANSWAGGON in Helsingborg in 2018, in the technical department, and got the job!

Many of my colleagues had been with TWA for years and had also worked with my mother. TRANSWAGGON is rich in family connections, and the family culture and sense of belonging are deeply rooted in the company’s identity. In 2019, I had supported an IT-related task and the then Sales Manager (now Managing Director) Jörgen Andersson had the idea that I could take over the management of IT in Helsingborg in a few years’ time, after my mother retired. I didn’t have any formal IT training, but I did have an urge to understand how things work. So, although I was hesitant at first, I took the opportunity to test out the IT role.

Today, my main tasks are IT-related. And to my surprise, this has turned out to be the most enjoyable, challenging and rewarding experience of my career. I am eternally grateful to those who recognised my potential and gave me the opportunity to develop. Today, I want to give back to TRANSWAGGON and contribute to the corporate culture in my own way. There are many reasons why I thrive here: the beautiful working environment, the short decision-making paths, the accessible management, the balance between freedom and responsibility, the community we share outside work hours and the feeling of really being seen and appreciated.”

„As an employer, TRANSWAGGON places great importance on a social, friendly, and supportive atmosphere with its colleagues. Our goal is to consistently deliver high-quality work and offer our employees a variety of development opportunities. In Hamburg, numerous paths are open to them – whether it be a move to a different department, professional training, or career advancement. If employees have problems, whether professionally or privately, we in Hamburg do everything in our power to help. For us as an HR department, this means that we solve professional challenges together with the respective managers, and if necessary with the help of external service providers. We also try to help with personal problems. The minimum that we offer is free professional psychological support as desired. But our help goes beyond that – it is always tailored to the individual. TRANSWAGGON is very attentive to its employees.”

„For many years now, I have been fascinated by the exciting and challenging world of railway – a world in which I am delighted to be able to work. On this 60th anniversary, I am grateful to be part of a company that offers me interesting tasks, a friendly working environment and frequent new opportunities. These are the values that make TRANSWAGGON so special and successful.“

”In my perception, the values and corporate culture of TRANSWAGGON are those of a family business. From an employee’s point of view, this has the positive effects of stability and trustworthiness, among other things. TRANSWAGGON allows me to grow as a professional. Another advantage: I am not left to my own devices. Instead, the company supports me in an organised and structured way. A family-run company like TRANSWAGGON is simply closer to its employees. And to its customers.”

The origin of the success story
In the mid-1960s, Udo-Wolfgang Benthin (1929-2015) comes up with the idea of coupling two 2-axle freight wagons to form a 3-axle wagon unit. Context: at this time, tonnage tariffs are still being charged rather than wagon loads. Having one wagon instead of two, and with a higher payload, the new design brings a huge competitive advantage. TRANSWAGGON AG is then founded in Zug (Switzerland) on 9 February 1965, followed by TRANSWAGGON AB in Helsingborg (Sweden) on 15 February 1965.
